I have to disagree. Women's issues in the context of this site is about women having the opportunity to openly discuss their situations where appropriate and receive the support and acceptance that we every person in society deserves. It is not about one-up-manship, but about being able to access the support and services necessary to live a whole and happy life. Unfortunately, for centuries, many women's needs have been suppressed because they have so many responsibilities with regards to their families and it is getting harder for women to balance all of these. So empowerment from my perspective is all about a woman understanding her body and how to keep it healthy and not feeling like she can't speak about what is going on for her and receive support.

Wow! Kath this is so well deserved. You are a shining light for the rest of us. It is so good that someone as worthwhile as you gets such an award. It makes such as refreshing change from all the sportspeople and celebrities who so readily attract attention.

Thank you for all the work you do on behalf of all of us as women.
Tthis is such wonderful news,
Blessings
Rachel.

That's fabulous news, Dianne. I am so grateful that you organised a team of women up in Carnarvon the celebrate the International Gynae Awarness Day event and that it was a huge success for the rural women.

If only I could find more women like you around the world that would be willing to do the same, before you know it we would earnestly have a world-wide event and wouldn't that just be so exciting to see the message getting out there to people.

Hi Kath,

Yes the audience responded so well to the Dr. Tiia, my friend who helped decorate, asked the first question and then the ball started to roll. There would have been at least 30 minutes of questions, answers and discussion so I think it was fantastic. Just ladies talking afterwards mentioning that they must go and get check ups and how much they enjoyed the session was a pretty good indicator of how everyone was feeling. I shared my special jewel that you gave me last year and had it sitting on the container for the gold coin donation. Shared it with Vasanthi before her talk and she thought it was a crack up – she said it was the crown jewel. Maureen, from Soroptimist wore her little brooch that you made for us last year and I was disappointed that I didn’t think of doing the same. Oh well there is always next year.

We raised $230 for Cancer Council which was rather special considering the recent death of 2 young mums from Carnarvon who both died in the same week. Jenny’s sister Elizabeth attended today with many of her relatives from the Phillipines as Jenny’s funeral was yesterday. Both were originally diagnosed with breast cancer – Christine 5 years ago and Jenny only last year not long after your visit last October so it was very sad. We had the knickers hanging like a washing line, which went down well and managed to get a washing basket full of new knickers for the local Women’s Refuge Centre. Many ladies said they would like to see the new kicker idea continue each year so it looks like we will have it again in 2010. I wonder what interesting things will happen between now and then??????

Dear Kath congratualations on all you achieved.you have inspired me to carry the torch here in the UK and that I am busy doing in memory of all the women who have died from gynae cancer.
Dying through ignorance is just not acceptable in 2009- we can fly to the moon, watch anyone anywhere in the world, treat many illnesses which were previously killers, including cancer, and yet women are dying, or suffering from mutilating surgery and the constant worry of cancer returning as it is such a predatory beast...all because they do not know enough about their own bodies- be cancer aware, know what is normal for our reproductive system-even when we no longer need to reproduce, we need to check everything out-check your vulva with a mirror, know the signs and symptoms of gynae cancers, and DO SOMETHING if you are worried-and keep on till you are no longer worried.Health professionals are there to listen to you- you are never wasting their time.....
you are someone's duaghter, mother, wife, partner, auntie, cousin, friend..you are precious beyond words- do not bleed in private, or suffer pain in private, or cope with intimate itching in private, or bloating, speak to someone who can help you.
